Shawano Lake

Went fishing last night. Went to Berry Lake in Oconto County. The water was so low from shore we couldn't launch the boat. We tried several times with no luck. Thought we were gonna get the truck stuck. It was like quick sand. My shoes ended up covered in the crap. Couldn't get the trailer in the water far enough to get the boat far enough into the water to push off. Truck was darn near water up to the bumper so I was kind of ticked we couldn't launch. So we left there and went up the road to Shawano Lake.

It is pretty shallow to launch there but we were able to at least get the boat off the trailer. We finally got on the water at about 5pm. Fishing was so slow. I had one good hit that banged my lure but no hook up. It wasn't until about 8 or 8:30 that we started having any action. Off to the right of the main lake was like some grassy areas about 1-3 ft deep and we were fishing up the little channel like areas and Pat caught a small snake. So we worked that area and he ended up catching 2 more snakes.

We moved to another patch of grass and I was using a spinnerbait with my Natural cream round rubber and golden yellow fishscale skirt and I casted right into the grass let it drop and reeled about two times around and BAM!!! baby! I got it to the boat and the sucker started fighting me and went around the motor then went under the boat and I thought, oh no, I am gonna loose it! But I just picked up my rod and pulled it up real high and it came up out of the water.

I was able to boat it and took pics and weighed it. It was almost 3 lbs. My heaviest bass to date. Forgot to measure it though. I was pretty excited the rest of the time which wasn't too much longer. It got dark and started to rain so we came off the lake and I was happy to have caught the only bass this time, lol!

I'm back from Lake Buckatabon

Hey! I'm back from my trip! Had a great time. Of course it's never long enough that you can be gone fishing.

The first half of the week was warm and beautiful. The second half of the week was cold and rainy. We did catch fish every time we went out. But they were on the small side. Caught mostly bass. I think we got one or two snakes.
My mother caught the biggest bass of the week at 17" and 3 lbs! Yay, mommie! My biggest bass of the week was 16" and 1.5lbs. It's interesting the weight difference in only a 1/2" from our two fish.

We talked to a guide in Eagle River later in the week which was about 10 miles from where we were staying. He said the fish are weirded out this week because of the weather they were having. He said that water temps kept going up and down. While we were there a big cold front moved through. I think Wednesday we fished all day in the rain and it was very tough fishing that day.

While we were all out pan fishing, we saw a guy and his son take his boat into the weeds and watched him use his oar to push himself through this channel. So we thought the next day we would check it out ourselves and see where it went.

My step-dad, hubby and I went out and found the channel. We were able to get in a little ways and then it started bending and curving and it was very narrow. We had a 16ft fishing boat. This channel was not more than two feet across. My step-dad was like, no way, get out of here, we ain't never gonna make it. He just had back surgery 7 weeks ago so he couldn't do much to help us through there. I had an oar and my hubby had an oar. I said, just sit down and don't worry about it, we will get through. My hubby looked again and said he could see the other lake.
So we are trying to manuever (sp?) this big fishing boat with 3 people in it through this tiny windy channel. It was very tiring using oars to push off of. We had to use an oar to pick up a log and move it so we could keep going through, we got stuck on the bottom once. My hubby decided to stand up on the deck at one point to help push us through. We were finally about two feet from the opening to get into this hidden lake when my hubby pushed off and fell of the deck and landed in the channel! I turned and looked and he was on his left side with total shock on his face. I was shocked too because I was pushing from the other side of the boat and I turn and see him laying in the lake. He landed on a log. I asked him if he was alright. He said ya. I asked him if I could laugh. He said, you can laugh it was funny and I just busted out, once I knew he was ok. Poor guy!

So it took us like a half an hour or so to get through this and all we kept saying was I hope it was worth it. It was. My hubby threw the first cast since he was in the front of the boat and he caught a huge crappie! But it got off. So we started fishing for bass. My step-dad caught two bass and hubby caught two bass back there. I was using a spinnerbait and caught a nice slab crappie. So they stopped bass fishing and we all crappie fished. We ended up getting like 5 or 6 nice ones. But we had to head back for supper or we would have stayed to catch more.

So that was the big highlight of the trip was going through this channel and having my hubby fall overboard and not getting hurt. No one could believe we made it through there. Good news is, it only took us about 15 minutes to get back out. It took alot of heave-ho to get through there pushing off bottom and the sides of the weeds but we did it! That's what I call being adventurous!

I added several pics on the website www.CustomFishingSkirts.com/fishingpictures.html feel free to check them out!

Gone Fishing-Final Countdown

Only two days left and we hit the road to Conover Wisconsin- (4hrs NORTH!). Every year we take a week and rent a cottage with my parents and split expenses and fish until our arms fall off. Well, I do any way. If there is a thing as fisher's elbow or casting-itis, I will have it by the time the week is over. I will also have to check in to bass rehab when I get back. BASSer's anonymous anyone? lol.

We will be fishing upper and lower Lake Buckatabon. This lake is known for trophy muskie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye and northern pike and of course abundant panfish.Looking forward to a weeks worth of almost non-stop fishing! Will make a post when we get back and will have new pictures of some Kodak moments:O)

Until then, happy fishing........

None for me, two for him

We went fishing again on Sunday in Gresham. We started out at lower red because we wanted to check it out, never fished there. It was pretty much weeds every where. I wouldn't say totally weed choked but the weeds in some places were up to the water surface. Alot of it you were able to run a spinnerbait across the top without hanging up.

We fished different areas of the lake for about two hours without finding where the bass were so I said let's go to the upper red. We went there last weekend where I caught my two bass.

We went to upper red and couldn't find the bass again. Pat had one small one follow up on a spinnerbait. We went around the whole lake using spinnnerbaits, jigs and he tried a worm this time. Nothing.

Pat was able to hook into two northern while we were there. Just as he was releasing the smaller one, I noticed it had a chunk missing out of it's tail. When I took the pics off my camera, it showed up in the pic so you can see where something got a hold of it and it almost looks fresh.

After two hours of fishing the upper red. I had enough for the day. It was about 7:30pm by then and it was windy through out the day but the winds were picking up more by then. So we called it a day. At least we didn't get skunked again.
